Do you know the difference between adult and child CPR?

If you have been on one of our First Aid at Work courses you will know how to resuscitate a non-breathing adult but you may not know the difference between adult, child and infant CPR. Importantly, you can use the adult sequence of resuscitation on a child or baby who is unresponsive and not breathing, compressing the chest to 1/3 of its depth. A child or baby is far more likely to be harmed if you do nothing. The following modifications should make the CPR much more effective:

  • For Children or babies always give 5 initial rescue breaths.
  • Compress the chest by at least one-third of its depth.
  • For a child you may need to use one hand instead of two, you can change the hand if you get fatigued.
  • For a baby, use two fingers on the chest.
  • If you don’t have a phone do CPR for one minute before going for help.

If you would like to learn more about first aid specifically for children or babies why not book on to one of our paediatric first aid courses?
