New BSI Guidance Highlights the Growing Importance of AEDs in the Workplace
As workplace first aid standards continue to evolve, the British Standards Institution (BSI) has recently updated its guidance to place greater emphasis on the provision of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in the workplace. The new standard, BS 8599-1:2019+A1:2026, published in April 2026, now includes specific recommendations on the provision and placement of AEDs alongside workplace first aid kits.
Why are AEDs so important?
Every year, thousands of people suffer a sudden cardiac arrest outside of hospital. When this occurs, immediate CPR and early defibrillation can dramatically increase survival rates. An AED is designed to be used by ordinary people and provides clear, step-by-step voice instructions, making it a vital piece of lifesaving equipment.
What has changed?
The updated BSI guidance moves beyond simply recommending workplace first aid kits and now provides recommendations on the provision and positioning of AEDs. The guidance highlights the importance of ensuring that an AED can be accessed quickly in an emergency and forms part of an organisation's overall first aid planning.
The revised standard also reinforces the need for employers to consider the number of people on site, workplace risks, and site layout when determining appropriate first aid provision. This includes employees, visitors, contractors, and other site users.
Does my business need an AED?
Whilst the BSI standard is not a legal requirement, it represents recognised best practice and may be considered when assessing whether workplace first aid provision is adequate and appropriate. The updated guidance suggests that organisations with five or more people on site should consider providing an AED and ensuring it can be reached quickly in an emergency.
For larger premises, multiple AEDs may be required to ensure rapid access throughout the site.
Training matters
Having an AED is only part of the solution. Staff should be familiar with emergency procedures and confident in providing CPR while awaiting emergency services. AED awareness and practical CPR training can help staff act quickly and effectively during a cardiac emergency. The latest first aid training syllabuses continue to include AED use as an important component of workplace first aid provision.
