Dial 111 when It's less Urgent than 999
How Does it Work?
The NHS have introduced this new number in trial areas
around the UK. If your medicat situation is urgent but not life threatening you
should ring 111. The helpline is answered by medically qualified staff who will
ask you questions about your situation and direct you to the correct facility
such as A&E, a late night chemist, the dentist or your GP service. They may
even call an ambulance for you.
The NHS say that you should call 111 if:
- you need medical help fast but it's not a 999 emergency
- you think you need to go to A&E or need another NHS
urgent care service
- you don't know who to call or you don't have a GP to call
- you need health information or reassurance about what to do
